Bishop’s University is a prominent undergraduate institution in Canada, located in Sherbrooke, Quebec, in the district of Lennoxville. The university, which is primarily residential, enrolls about 2,400 students each year and is dedicated to providing a liberal arts education in a small class setting that stimulates research and discovery. Bishop’s University is ranked as one of the top 20 employers in the Eastern Townships.
Bishop’s University was established in 1943 as Bishop’s College and it was associated with the University of Oxford in 1853, where many of Bishop’s University’s professors now were appointed from. From its inception until 1947, the school was governed by the Anglican Church. The university has been a non-denominational institution since that time. Bishop’s University is affiliated to three other Maple League universities and is one of Canada’s few primarily undergraduate universities which operating similarly to an American Liberal Arts College.
Bishop’s University does not participate in rankings that are primarily based on research, such as QS, like other liberal arts universities in North America. Bishop’s, however, has consistently scored first in Canada for student happiness for the past three years, and Maclean’s magazine has ranked it seventh among Canadian predominantly undergraduate universities.
